Command reference for all h5i subcommands and flags.


Installation

Requires Rust 1.70+.

Command Groups

h5i organises verbs around four nouns. h5i --help shows them at the top; run h5i <noun> --help (or h5i help <noun>) for the verb table, runnable examples, legacy equivalents, and the corresponding MCP tool names.

All four nouns route through a pre-clap argv rewriter into the legacy verbs — so the noun form and the legacy form are functionally identical; the noun form is just the canonical name and the only one shown in --help.

Legacy forms

The original top-level verbs (h5i commit, h5i log, h5i push, …) keep working. The reference pages below are headed by their canonical noun-verb names, with the legacy alias noted inline on each page. Running a legacy verb prints a one-line h5i hint: line on stderr suggesting the new form, then proceeds normally. Pipes are unaffected because the hint goes to stderr.

h5i init

h5i init

Initialize h5i in the current Git repository. Creates .git/.h5i/ with subdirectories for AST snapshots, session logs, claims, and memory snapshots.

Also bootstraps agent-facing instructions:

Must be run once per repository before any other h5i command.

h5i hook manages the agent hook wiring that drives h5i's automatic prompt capture and context tracing. The handlers that do the actual per-event work are agent-specific and live under h5i claude (Claude Code) and h5i codex (Codex); h5i hook itself owns the cross-agent setup, session-start, and wrap-bash subcommands.

h5i hook setup

h5i hook setup (no flags) prints the install instructions. h5i hook setup --write writes the wiring directly: Claude Code into .claude/settings.json and Codex into .codex/config.toml, merged idempotently (each managed command is replaced in place; your own hooks and env keys are preserved). Add --target claude or --target codex to write only one agent's config, --scope user to write the user-level config instead of the repo's, and --wrap-bash to also register the optional Bash capture-wrap hook.

For Claude Code, --write installs four hooks into .claude/settings.json:

For Codex, --write --target codex merges inline hook tables into .codex/config.toml. Codex only supports the agent-agnostic SessionStart and Stop events here (the UserPromptSubmit / PostToolUse handlers are Claude-Code-specific and are skipped):

Codex requires reviewing/trusting local hooks via /hooks; project-local hooks only load after the project .codex/ layer is trusted.

Bash capture-wrap (--wrap-bash, optional). Adds a PreToolUse Bash hook (h5i hook wrap-bash) that rewrites every Bash command into a h5i capture run wrapper, so the agent receives a token-reduced summary for large/failing output while the full raw bytes stay stored and searchable via h5i recall. Off by default. Note: with it enabled, permission allowlists then match the rewritten h5i capture run … command, not the original.

MCP server (manual). Hook setup no longer wires the MCP server — register it by hand if you want native h5i tools in Claude Code. Add the mcpServers block to ~/.claude/settings.json:

Once registered, Claude Code gains native access to h5i tools (h5i_log, h5i_blame, h5i_context_trace, h5i_notes_show, etc.) without needing shell commands. See h5i mcp for the full tool list.

h5i hook session-start

The shared SessionStart handler for both Claude Code and Codex. Injects prior context (goal, recent decisions, live claims) into the new session's context window, and notes any unread cross-agent messages on resume. Registered automatically by h5i hook setup --write; you rarely run it by hand.

The optional PreToolUse handler for the Bash tool (Claude Code ≥ 2.0.10). Reads the tool event JSON from stdin and rewrites the command (via updatedInput) into a h5i capture run wrapper so the agent receives a token-reduced summary for large/failing output, while the full raw bytes are stored for h5i recall. Skips h5i's own commands, top-level cd (session cwd tracking), and anything outside a git repo; every failure path emits nothing, so the original command runs untouched. Register it with h5i hook setup --write --wrap-bash, or by hand under PreToolUse with matcher Bash.

Claude Code integration hook handlers. These are wired into .claude/settings.json by h5i hook setup --write (see h5i hook setup) and run automatically per event — you normally never invoke them by hand. They all fail open (no-op outside an h5i-initialized repo, never block the turn).

The PostToolUse handler. Reads the tool-event JSON from stdin and emits an h5i recall context trace entry for the appropriate kind (OBSERVE on Read, ACT on Edit/Write); on Read events it injects prior reasoning about the file into Claude's context window so accumulated THINK entries surface before the file is modified.

The Stop handler. Mines THINK / NOTE entries from the session transcript (including deferrals, placeholders, and unfulfilled promises detected in the agent's reasoning) and auto-checkpoints the context workspace milestone, so you never have to call h5i recall context trace or commit by hand.

The UserPromptSubmit handler. Reads the hook JSON from stdin and records the verbatim human prompt into .git/.h5i/pending_context.json, accumulating across turns. h5i capture commit then uses this raw human prompt as the recorded prompt — it wins over an agent-authored --intent — so AI provenance reflects what the human actually asked rather than the agent's paraphrase.

Codex integration hook handlers for restoring shared context, syncing Codex session activity into h5i recall context, and auto-checkpointing the context workspace. h5i hook setup --write --target codex wires h5i hook session-start (SessionStart) and h5i codex finish --quiet (Stop) into .codex/config.toml.

Unlike Claude Code's handlers under h5i claude, these read the active Codex JSONL session under ~/.codex/sessions/ directly and replay relevant file activity into refs/h5i/context, so they also work as plain commands you can run by hand if Codex's hook layer isn't trusted.

Print the current shared context in a compact session-start format: goal, branch, milestones, recent THINK/ACT entries, and open TODOs.

Use this at the beginning of a Codex session, or whenever you want to re-orient the agent without manually stitching together h5i recall context show, status, and todo.

Scan the active Codex session log for this repository and backfill OBSERVE / ACT trace entries into h5i recall context.

h5i codex finish

h5i codex finish [--summary <text>] [--quiet]

Run h5i codex sync, then auto-checkpoint the current context workspace. This is the command installed as Codex's Stop hook (as h5i codex finish --quiet).

If --summary is omitted, h5i derives a short checkpoint summary from the most recent ACT entries. Pass --quiet to suppress stdout for hook use.

Cross-agent messaging stored in Git (refs/h5i/msg), not a local database, so a conversation survives clones, machines, and branches and is shared with h5i share push / pull (divergent sends union-merge by message id). Messages follow the i5h protocol (docs/i5h-protocol.md): typed, operational handoffs rather than chat.

Setup and identity

Identity is per-agent, supplied by $H5I_AGENT (no --as on commands). Resolution order: --from/--as flag → $H5I_AGENT → stored default.

Several agents can share one clone safely: identity is per-process (env), the message ref is concurrency-safe (compare-and-swap on send), and read-state is kept in per-agent files (.git/.h5i/msg/cursors/<agent>.json, views/<agent>.json). Never use h5i msg as when two agents share a clone — it writes a single shared identity file; prefer $H5I_AGENT.

Typed verbs set the i5h kind (ASK, REVIEW_REQUEST, RISK, HANDOFF) and structured fields. Options must precede the recipient (the body is variadic).

Add --plain to any read command for greppable, uncoloured output.

Delivery modes

Incoming messages are framed as untrusted collaborator input, never as instructions; agents are told to evaluate and decide.

Quality vs Shape signals

h5i audit review (and the PR-comment 🚩) split rules into two tiers so size-based noise stops drowning out real risk signals.

Quality (high-precision — these alone can flag a commit):

Rule Fires when
CREDENTIAL_LEAK Added line matches the embedded regex pack (AWS / GCP / GitHub / Slack / Stripe / Anthropic / OpenAI / JWT / PEM private key) or an entropy-gated generic key=value assignment. Lockfiles, vendor dirs, fonts, binaries, and testdata/ are allowlisted; lines containing placeholder substrings (your-key-here, EXAMPLE, ${ENV}, …) are suppressed. Matched values redacted to first 4 chars.
CODE_EXECUTION Added line invokes eval(), os.system(), subprocess.*, Runtime.exec(), etc.
SENSITIVE_FILE_MODIFIED Touched a .env, .pem, .key, or similar high-value path.
CI_CD_MODIFIED Touched a CI/CD workflow file.
PERMISSION_CHANGE File mode bits changed (e.g. chmod +x).
TEST_REGRESSION Tests were passing on parent and now failing, OR coverage dropped >5%.

The PR-comment 🚩 fires when quality_score >= 0.25. Shape signals are listed in a secondary "shape signals (informational)" line — only when a Quality signal also fired. LARGE_DIFF alone is noise; LARGE_DIFF + BLIND_EDIT is a real review point.

The credential scanner lives in src/secrets.rs as an embedded regex pack — there is no runtime dependency on the gitleaks binary.


h5i share

Publish provenance to teammates and PRs.

Raw tool output is not shared by share push/pull. It carries the small token-reduction manifests (refs/h5i/objects — pointers + filtered summaries), but never the huge raw blobs (refs/h5i/objects-data / Git LFS). Those travel only when you explicitly run h5i objects push (and are fetched by h5i objects pull, or lazily by recall from LFS). So a teammate who h5i share pulls sees every capture's summary and pulls only the raw bytes they actually need.

Posts or previews a sticky GitHub PR comment summarising h5i provenance for every AI-authored commit on the current branch. Re-running upserts in place via an HTML marker (<!-- h5i:pr-comment v1 -->), so the PR never accumulates duplicate comments.

The comment renders, for each AI commit:

💬 Agent coordination (i5h messages)

Below the reasoning DAG, the comment folds in the cross-agent message threads (refs/h5i/msg, see h5i msg) that are relevant to this branch — a thread is included when at least one of its messages was tagged with the PR branch, and the whole thread (including replies tagged for another branch or none) travels with it. The section is collapsed by default and self-omits when no branch-relevant threads exist.

Messages are auto-tagged with the sender's current git branch, so a normal back-and-forth conducted while working on the branch is captured without any extra flags. send, ask, review, risk, and handoff all accept --branch <b> to tag for a different branch, or --branch "" to leave a message untagged. Replies (reply/ack/done/decline) do not use the responder's checkout — they inherit their thread's branch, so acknowledging a thread from an unrelated branch can't drag it into the wrong PR.

Because a PR comment is published, message text is treated as untrusted and disclosure-safe by default:

🪙 Token reduction

When the branch has token-reduction captures (h5i capture run, see h5i objects), the comment includes a one-line [!NOTE] summarising how much raw tool output was kept out of the agent's context — raw → summary tokens and % saved across the branch's captures — with a collapsible per-tool breakdown when more than one tool was captured. It self-omits when there were no captures on the branch (or no net saving). The raw output remains recoverable with h5i recall object.

Flags:

Hero block styles (--style)

The top of the comment — the part that fits in a screenshot — switches between the layouts below. The audit sections below the fold (secrets, duplicates, reasoning DAG, per-commit provenance) stay shared across styles, except replay, which promotes the DAG above the fold.

replay Mermaid reasoning swim-lane DAG promoted above the fold (expanded), with a goal callout and stats line above and an arrow-separated milestone trail below.

Requirements

Sticky upsert behaviour

h5i share pr post finds the existing h5i comment by HTML marker prefix and issues a PATCH /repos/<owner>/<repo>/issues/comments/<id> via gh api. If no marked comment exists yet, it falls back to gh pr comment --body-file - for the first post.


h5i objects (token reduction)

Large tool outputs — test logs, build output, big JSON, traces — are the biggest avoidable drain on an agent's context window. The object store keeps the full raw output out-of-band (content-addressed) and surfaces only a small filtered, structured summary, git-annex / git-lfs style:

The everyday entry point is h5i capture run; the h5i objects verbs are for maintenance. Only the small summary travels with h5i share push; raw blobs stay local (an absent blob is shown as , and h5i recall object reports it clearly).

h5i capture run

Run a command, store its full output, and print only the summary. The exit code passes through, so it's a transparent wrapper:

The manifest+summary travel with h5i share push automatically; the raw bytes are local-only by default (they can be large). To share them:

Git LFS (default). h5i speaks the LFS Batch API natively — it does not require the git lfs CLI and does not use LFS pointer files; auth is resolved via git credential. The manifest's raw_oid is the pointer, the bytes live in LFS. With LFS, h5i recall object <id> lazily fetches a blob from the server on demand (and caches it) — no explicit objects pull needed. Uploads/downloads process one blob at a time (the whole set is never held in memory at once). Lazy recall only tries the origin remote.

git-ref store (fallback). Blobs live in refs/h5i/objects-data. objects push fetches + union-merges the remote ref before a non-force push (so it never clobbers a peer's blobs); objects pull union-merges and caches locally; then recall falls back to the local git-ref store (it does not fetch on demand — the "absent" error says to run objects pull).

Both are deliberately separate from the metadata h5i share push (raw output is heavy), and both verify the content address on every read — bytes that don't hash to their key are rejected and never cached; the git-ref store additionally self-heals corrupt entries on put/pull.

The Backend trait (has/put/get/remove by sha256) is the extension point: LFS and the git-ref store are the built-ins; an S3/HTTP backend can slot in the same way.

h5i objects filters / trust

Beyond the coded adapters, h5i ships declarative per-command filter rules (gcc, make, npm, tsc, terraform, …) used for the text summary. These rules and the engine that runs them are derived from rtk (Apache-2.0, © Patrick Szymkowiak); the log line-folding technique is from headroom (Apache-2.0). See the NOTICE and assets/filters/NOTICE files for full attribution.

A repo may ship its own .h5i/filters.toml. Because that file is untrusted input (a malicious rule could mask failures), it is applied only after you trust its current content; any edit re-arms the gate:

h5i rewind <sha> [options]

Restore the working tree to the exact file state of any past commit without moving HEAD. Unlike rollback (which creates a new revert commit), rewind directly overwrites files in place so you can inspect the result with git diff HEAD before deciding what to do next.

Safety: before touching any file, the current dirty state is committed to refs/h5i/shadow/<yyyymmdd-hhmmss> — a lightweight WIP commit that is never on any branch. Recovery is always possible:

h5i recall context

A version-controlled reasoning workspace stored in refs/h5i/context that survives session resets. Command structure mirrors Git. Based on arXiv:2508.00031, enhanced with five capabilities derived from recent research (CMV paper arXiv:2602.22402, Claude Code design-space analysis arXiv:2604.14228):

  1. DAG trace nodes — every trace entry is a node in a directed acyclic graph with explicit parent_ids; merge operations create two-parent nodes so parallel branches stay causally connected.
  2. Ephemeral traces (--ephemeral) — scratch observations excluded from the DAG, excluded from snapshots, and cleared on the next context commit; analogous to Claude Code's /btw.
  3. Three-pass lossless pack — removes subsumed OBSERVEs, merges consecutive OBSERVEs about the same file, and preserves all THINK/ACT/NOTE entries verbatim.
  4. Stable-prefix / dynamic-suffix splitcontext status and context cached-prefix show the prompt-caching boundary in the trace.
  5. Subagent-scoped sub-contexts (context scope) — lightweight scope/<name> branches for delegated subagent investigation, shown separately in status.

Before writing, the CLI verifies that the current Git branch has a goal and the active h5i context branch has a purpose. If either is missing, it prints the setup command to run.

By default the entry is durable: it is written to trace.md (human-readable) and to dag.json (the DAG), and it survives snapshots and session resets.

With --ephemeral the entry goes to ephemeral.md only — it is excluded from the DAG, excluded from snapshots, and automatically cleared on the next h5i recall context commit. Use this for scratch observations you only need for the current step (analogous to Claude Code's /btw).

Compact the current branch's OTA trace using a three-pass structurally-lossless algorithm derived from the Contextual Memory Virtualisation paper (arXiv:2602.22402):

When to use

On long-running tasks the trace grows one line per OTA step. After many iterations the OBSERVE entries — tool outputs, file reads, test results — tend to dwarf the THINK/ACT reasoning that actually matters. h5i recall context pack strips the noise while guaranteeing that no decision or action is ever lost.

Why this matters

Anthropic's prompt caching has a 5-minute TTL. If the stable prefix (goal, milestones, older trace entries) is serialised before the volatile suffix, repeated agent steps pay only for the dynamic suffix while the stable portion is served from cache. This maps to the cost-recovery finding in the CMV paper (arXiv:2602.22402): cost neutrality within ~10 conversational turns.


h5i recall recap

Import Claude Code Recap entries (internally {"type":"system","subtype":"away_summary"} JSONL records) from the active session log as context commits.

Claude Code periodically emits a recap of the form Goal: … <what was done>. Next: … (disable recaps in /config). h5i recall recap harvests those records, splits each body into (summary, detail) on the Next: boundary, and creates one h5i recall context commit per recap. Imported UUIDs are tracked in recaps.json at the root of refs/h5i/context, so repeated runs are idempotent.

When to use

Recaps are already concise, timestamped checkpoints produced by Claude Code itself — running h5i recall recap before h5i recall context commit lets you cheaply promote them into durable milestones instead of writing each summary by hand. The trailing (disable recaps in /config) marker and the originating UUID / session ID are preserved in the commit detail so each milestone is traceable back to its source record.

h5i claims

Record content-addressed claims about the codebase that auto-invalidate when their evidence files change. A claim pins (path, blob_oid) pairs at HEAD as a Merkle-style fingerprint; any edit to any evidence blob flips the claim from live to stale. Live claims are injected into the h5i recall context prompt preamble so future sessions can treat them as pre-verified facts instead of re-deriving them from scratch.

Stored under .git/.h5i/claims/<id>.json.

When to use: record a claim after the agent (or you) concludes something non-obvious about the code that took exploration to establish — "the retry loop lives in send(), not a middleware layer," "error variant FooError::Parse is never constructed outside parser.rs," "the CRDT snapshot cadence is driven by commit, not time." These are the conclusions you'd otherwise pay input tokens to re-derive next session.

The ⚠ inject(N) score tag on a commit means N prompt-injection signals were found in the session's thinking blocks or key decisions (stored by h5i recall notes analyze). Requires h5i recall notes analyze to have been run for that session; commits without session data show no injection tag.

What is checked

At commit time, only rules from [commit] and [paths] sections are enforced. The compliance report additionally checks max_ai_ratio and max_blind_edit_ratio per path — rules designed for historical trend analysis rather than blocking individual commits.

h5i env (isolated agent sandboxes)

An environment is a Git-addressed, policy-confined, fully-observed unit of agent work — the "triple fusion" of:

Use an env for any risky or exploratory work (a refactor, a dependency upgrade, an untrusted build) instead of editing the main tree in place. Every env run is policy-enforced and capture-wrapped (evidence lands in refs/h5i/objects, tagged with the env id and the enforced policy digest); env shell opens an interactive confined session in the same box for hands-on work. The lifecycle is create → run → propose → apply | abort → gc, and apply is never automaticpropose surfaces a review brief, a reviewer applies.

Env state lives in refs/h5i/env (events, manifests, policies) and is shared by h5i share push / h5i share pull, enabling a cross-clone review loop (one agent proposes, another reviews and applies). See docs/environments-design.md and the live Sandbox dashboard in h5i serve.

Lifecycle commands

<name> accepts a bare slug, agent/slug, or the full env/agent/slug.

In-box git, capture & commit

At the confined tiers (process/supervised/container) the env worktree is a functional git checkout from inside the box: git status/add/commit, h5i recall context …, and other plumbing work against the env's own branch (refs/heads/h5i/env/<agent>/<slug>). The box gets exactly the surface it needs (its own worktree admin dir, the object store, its own ref namespace + reasoning ref) and nothing protected — it cannot move main, plant git hooks, touch another agent's branches, or rewrite its own policy.

Interactive sessions are also locked down and observed:

Troubleshooting — "h5i data store not writable". If a capture/commit fails with this, the on-disk store under .git/.h5i is owned by another user — almost always left root-owned by an earlier sudo/root run. h5i prints the exact repair:

(Inside an env sandbox the store is intentionally sealed; that case is handled by the spool above, not by changing ownership.)

Isolation tiers

--isolation (or isolation = in the profile) sets the minimum claim. With no --isolation (or --isolation auto), env create is secure-by-default: it auto-picks the strongest tier the host can actually run (container > supervised > process > workspace), each candidate gated by the same checks create applies, so an auto-picked tier is guaranteed runnable. An explicit tier fails closed — h5i refuses (never silently downgrades) when the host cannot satisfy it, and re-verifies functionally (capability bits present ≠ confinement can exec). Set H5I_DEFAULT_ISOLATION to pin a clone's default tier.

The supervised socket gate is default-deny: only boring inet (AF_INET/AF_INET6, SOCK_STREAM/SOCK_DGRAM) — or an explicitly granted AF_UNIX — may proceed; raw/packet/netlink/vsock and unknown socket shapes are denied with EPERM, and every verdict is recorded. This gate is also what makes the net.egress allowlist unbypassable: untrusted code runs as root within its own user namespace (so nft keeps CAP_NET_ADMIN across execve), but the gate denies AF_NETLINK, so the program cannot open the netlink socket nft/ip would need to rewrite the ruleset or routes.

The fully-resolved policy is serialized to policy.resolved.toml and its sha256 digest is pinned in the env manifest and in every capture — so the policy actually enforced is tamper-evident.

Secrets broker

Declared secrets are resolved from host-side sources at run time (never at policy load), injected into the run, scrubbed from the captured evidence, and audited — all fail-closed (a missing source aborts the run).

Resource limits

The process/supervised tiers apply cgroup v2 limits (memory.max, pids.max, accurate memory.peak / cpu.stat) when the host delegates a writable cgroup subtree to the user (a systemd user session — h5i discovers the delegated user@<uid>.service subtree, no root needed). Where delegation is unavailable, it falls back to rlimits (RLIMIT_AS/NPROC/FSIZE/CPU). h5i env probe reports whether cgroups are usable. A wall-clock timeout kills the whole process tree (exit 124).

Implementation

When a subscription is registered, h5i spawns a background polling thread (2-second interval) per URI. Each poll serialises the full resources/read response and compares it to the last-seen snapshot. If the content changed, the snapshot is updated and a notifications/resources/updated notification is pushed to stdout. Subscribing to an already-watched URI is idempotent — the existing thread is reused. Unsubscribing removes the URI from the watch map; the thread exits on its next poll.

h5i resolve

h5i resolve <ours-oid> <theirs-oid> <file>

Run a text-based 3-way merge for <file> between two commits. The ancestor is the git merge-base of the two OIDs; h5i materializes the three blobs and delegates to git merge-file -p, then prints the merged content to stdout.

When textual conflicts cannot be resolved, the output contains the usual <<<<<<< ours / ======= / >>>>>>> theirs markers and the command exits with status 1; otherwise it exits 0.

Note: Earlier versions of h5i resolve did a Yjs CRDT semantic merge reading from a per-commit crdt_states field. That dependency has been removed; resolve now behaves like a deterministic, git-native 3-way merge.

Three additional directories (ast/, crdt/, metadata/) are created on h5i init but are not actively used for storage — data is stored in Git refs instead.

None of the refs/h5i/* refs are pushed or fetched by a plain git push / git pull. Use h5i share push / h5i share pull to share them.


Appendix: Integrity Rules

Run with h5i capture commit --audit or via the Re-audit button in h5i serve. Pure string and stat checks — no AI, no network.

Violations always block the commit. Warnings block unless --force is passed.

To add a rule: add a pub const to rule_id in src/rules.rs, write one pure fn check_*(ctx: &DiffContext) -> Vec<RuleFinding>, and register it in run_all_rules. No other changes needed.

exit_code takes precedence over counts when determining pass/fail. total is computed from counts if omitted.

h5i reads the following environment variables. All are optional — h5i ships with sensible defaults.

Commit provenance

Auto-captured when the Claude Code hook is installed; you usually do not set these by hand.

Variable Default Purpose
H5I_PROMPT unset User prompt that triggered the current commit. Falls back to --prompt if both are present.
H5I_MODEL unset AI model name recorded on the commit (e.g. claude-sonnet-4-6).
H5I_AGENT_ID unset Agent identifier recorded on the commit (e.g. claude-code, codex). Also used as the default --author for h5i claims and the default backend for h5i codex / inference.

Tests

H5I_TEST_CMD unset Shell command h5i runs when --tests is passed without --test-cmd/--test-results. Its stdout must be a test-adapter JSON object.

H5I_SECRET_<NAME> unset Default source for a secret grant <name> whose profile source is env:H5I_SECRET_<NAME> (the default). The broker injects it into the run, redacts it from evidence, and audits it by fingerprint — never the value. See secrets.

Token reduction

AST parser

h5i shells out to python3 h5i-py-parser.py for Python AST extraction.

H5I_PARSER_DIR unset Directory to search first for h5i-py-parser.py. Must be an existing directory; if it exists but is not a directory (or does not exist), h5i logs a warning at warn level and falls through to <repo>/plugin/ then <bindir>/[..]/plugin/.
H5I_PARSER_TIMEOUT_SECS 30 Hard timeout (whole seconds) for the parser subprocess. The child is killed if it exceeds this. Non-positive or non-numeric values fall back to the default.

Claims

Logging

Variable Default Purpose
H5I_LOG off tracing_subscriber env filter for h5i's internal diagnostics (subprocess timeouts, invalid H5I_PARSER_DIR, etc.). Typical values: h5i_core=warn, h5i_core=debug. Logs go to stderr so stdout stays clean for piped/MCP consumers. RUST_LOG is also honored as a fallback.
